Twenty-seventh in the series by Michael Baum works in two distinct styles: A neo-realism informed by Edward Hopper's work and a whimsical style all his own. He usually keeps them apart, choosing whichever style is most appropriate for his subject. The Balloon Fiesta's realistic whimsy has him painting with rare integration to capture the unique contrasts of the world's greatest ballooning event. The delightful fusion depicts intensely rendered balloons floating in a high definition sky over a compressed landscape centered around an adobe home of implausible confection. The spartan quiet below and the aeronautical sport above are a study in contrasts that showcase the essence of this spectacular 10-day gathering.
